The Long con. As my Dad was trying to build a career, with it came the need to move a lot. He left the family business to find his path and that path led us to many states. All wonderful in their own way with one being a quick one year stop in Houston Texas. The company he moved with put us up in a great home. A wealthy neighborhood where most of the pro athletes lived. Not that this has anything to do with the story but it was always fun to ride my bike past their houses in the back part of the neighborhood and see what money could buy. I seemed to make friends pretty easily but kids are always better than adults at making friends. Add to the fact I was a good athlete and a top of the line dodgeball player so I always had that in my back pocket when entering a new school. I became pretty good friends with a kid and we did what kids do after school. Ride bikes, play in the waste water ditches behind the neighborhood, see who could catch and preserve the largest frog (hint:look in the waster water ditches), get shaved ice. You know the typical stuff. But one day we got into an argument. He made fun of me being pigeon-toed. Called me names. If I had a loose wire it was the pigeon toe thing. It was what gave me my good soccer skills. I could cut better. Quicker off the line. But I walked funny and I hated when people made fun of it. Ironically it took Michael Jordan being pigeon toed to take off the pigeon toe pressure of me. But that was many years later. When he called me names I went up to him and slung him down. The typical kid throwing another kid down. I didn’t have any karate skills or anything. Just a caught him off guard throw down. He cried, ran home, didn’t talk to me a few days.
The next day his sister comes up to my table at lunch. I’m pretty sure she’s going to hit me or yell at me. She is a year older and much bigger than us. But I already had a crush on her. I hadn’t thought of the impact on our future relationship at the point of the fight but now I realize I may have scarred it a bit. But she wasn’t mad. Instead she gave me an incredible sweet roll from the cafeteria. They were legendary. 50cents but worth every penny. As big as a 45 record and loaded with sugar. Looks like she didn’t like her brother either. Like most kids her brother and I quickly became friends again and all was forgotten. And I had a new crush. She brought me a sweet roll several times a week for a month.
Then one day she brought me a sweet roll that seemed just a bit softer than the rest. Seems like the kitchen didn’t have their best batch that day and a little undercooked. My friends sister comes up to me laughing. I said “What’s so funny?” She replied “You are an idiot. I have been spitting in a sweet roll every day for a month and you’ve been eating it. But you never even noticed so I had to put a lot more in it so you could tell. That’s for picking on my little brother”
I did what any kid would do. I looked at her, set the goey middle on her tray, and took the outside and ate it. I figured most people spit in the middle section. Here are today’s names. If you like the names below, click through to see the current price
